NATIONAL GOLF DAY UPDATE!!!!
OK, so yesterday I went to Capitol Hill and joined with various members of the Golf Industry to try and heighten awareness for the fantastic economic and environmental benefit of golf.
So why is this a big deal? Let’s see here… when an industry which has over a $70 billion impact is routinely bracketed with massage parlors in legislation – there may be a problem with how golf is percieved! and for the most part everyone we met with was positive. BUT this is a long battle – to change the way our legislators, and family, and friends subconsciously think about golf. We all need to work on it, whenever we can. When I overheard a couple of guys talking about how a golf course was polluting a creek, I couldn’t help myself. I invited myself into their conversation, and even ended up with calling our superintendent to have him confirm what I was saying. People are just used to thinking certain things, for example: Santa wears a red suit, Mom will pick the clothes up off the floor, and golf is an elitist sport that is bad for the environment. Wrong!
We know differently but the incorrect perception does not die easily – that will take years to change. So, all the meetings with our legislators are tremendously important, – and thank you to all of the staff that I bothered in the offices of Mikulski, Cardin, Sarbanes, Van Hollen (restraint! don’t get me started about MUNICIPAL golf..), Kratovil and Hoyer. I will be in contact with all of them again soon!
PLEASE FEEL FREE TO DO THE SAME! I know that we all have chances, at charity events, etc. to meet with not only the legislators, but the rest of us who may not have a clear concept of our sport and the fantastic impact it has on our communities. and I haven’t even mentioned the charitable dollars raised on golf courses…
OK, enough Charlie, you say, where is the proof? Weren’t you really just playing golf???

Here is your proof!!

Well done Charlie, golf needs a voice in Washington.

I love your point about people’s perceptions and their resistance to change. Are you familiar with petition circulating to help make a positive impact on golf? If not, let me know and I’ll be happy to link you up.
All the best.
