AA County Funders roundtable – update on need in Anne Arundel County by Charlie Birney

I have just attended a roundtable update and discussion of the amount of need that exists just in our immediate community. Less than a year ago, the AACF put out a report about the “two faces of Anne Arundel” which talked about the same thing. Now, the economy has simply increased all of the levels of need to our area. You name it, the list is simply overwhelming.

One of the key indicators of this, on the large scale, is the steady increase in every period for at least the last two years of recipients of food stamps. In the last year alone, this has grown 25%.

And the overall need for all charities.. to use their programs, get medical help, find housing, teach the children? The overall need is transportation. This too, has not changed. We held a little philanthropy summit (remember, Chanell?) here at the Brick Companies Foundation and asked our charity partners what they had as their greatest issues. We spent a few hours, broke into groups, came back and talked. Our result: transportation is the greatest need in our communities.

There are a lot of programs out there that need to be utilized – like the ones at the Department of Social Services, but you still need to get there to utilize them. I wish I had a solution, but I know that funding the buses for the Boys & Girls Clubs was a great idea. Now we need to work on what’s next! Maybe the Irregular money this year should go into a fuel fund!

A Word about Twitter and the Calendar by Charlie Birney

ball-cap-newOK, so what is the stuff on the left, anyway? Well, Atlantic Golf has a great blog now (see Darth Vader golf!) and yes, I have signed up for “Twitter”. My only intentions with it are the same as for this blog. Thanks again to Garret Ohm, who set it up for me, but my updates and tweets and whatever are going to be about our charity work, golf, the environment… and fun! That seems to really work -thanks G, that was all you.

SO, if you follow people on Twitter, please sign up! I will tweet about the Irregular dates, about the Classic and about other community events. I will not be tweeting about the twins (Dion and Isabel are 9! How is this possible…) and how amazing they are – as much as I would like to! and thanks!

The CALENDAR on the left is new and will really hold a lot of information. You can see all of our upcoming events there, and I think if you click on it, you will get additional stuff. Let me know! This is all new! BUT for you Irregulars reading this… THAT IS WHERE TO FIND OUT WHERE WE ARE GOLFING! The calendar! Amazing!

and check out the Atlantic Golf Blog too! Much better than this! You can even tweet your tee times now! Really! You can find out more about that in the post on the AG blog.

If you are an Irregular reading this, let me know what you think! Hope to see you in April!

NOTE!: faithful Irregular Patty Lewis is helping the American Business Women’s Association and their first annual golf tournament held on May 14th! Please contact me for more information about the event and what the ABWA does. Patty, I have the PDF files for the event, but haven’t figured out how to post one of those yet! I will be happy to email them to anyone who is interested!!
